Join SAFAR Film Festival for a double bill of films centring stories of migration within the Arab world.
In his sweet and sour melodrama Dirty Difficult Dangerous where cruelty, comedy and tenderness imbricate, Wissam Charaf offers an intimate vision of today’s Lebanese society.
Ahmed, a Syrian refugee, and Mehdia, an Ethiopian migrant domestic worker, are living an impossible love in Beirut. While Mehdia tries to free herself from her employers, Ahmed struggles to survive dealing in second-hand metal scraps, affected by a mysterious disease.
The two lovers have nothing to lose. One day, they take their chance and flee Beirut in a hopeful and desperate attempt to get away.
“[Dirty Difficult Dangerous’] intentionally minimalist tone and set design, and its occasionally incredible adventures… lend charm and a fabled air to a work which prioritizes restrained simplicity and unpretentious freshness in a complicated quest for freedom.” — Cineuropa
Dirty Difficult Dangerous will be preceded by Morad Mostafa’s short film I Promise You Paradise (2023), winner of over 40 international awards. Following a violent incident, Eissa, a 17-year-old African migrant in Egypt, strives to beat the clock to save his loved ones whatever it takes.
